The Mutiara Line: where the build stands
The Mutiara Line was 8.99% complete as at June 2026, according to the Transport Ministry, with operations targeted for December 2031. In August its RM3.028 billion systems contract — trains, signalling, track, power and fare collection — was awarded to the MRCB–Theta Edge joint venture. The planned Permatang Damar Laut station (S02) is 4.6 km from Southbay, as published by the developer.
Where the build stands
In a written reply reported by The Star on 24 June 2026, the Transport Ministry put the 29.67 km line at 8.99% complete, with operations targeted for December 2031. Most of the build is still ahead.
The Silicon Island–Komtar section shows what progress looks like on the ground. FMT, carrying a Bernama report on 6 August 2026, said 93% of its land was available, work had started on 14 of the 19 sections along it, 45 pile caps and 32 pier columns had been built, and soil investigation had begun for the depot on Silicon Island.
The contracts
The RM3.028 billion system turnkey contract is one package for everything that makes the line run: trains, signalling, track, power and fare collection. Malay Mail and FMT reported on 6 August 2026 that it had gone to the MRCB–Theta Edge joint venture.
The Komtar–Penang Sentral section is at an earlier stage. The Edge reported the same day that its contract award is targeted for November 2026.
